Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) is considered one of the leading figures of the Expressionist movement. This catalogue provides an in-depth analysis of the sitters for his earliest portraits, painted in Vienna and Berlin on the eve of World War I, including Alma Mahler, Adolf Loos, and Peter Altenberg.

In addition to the oil portraits, the catalogue includes a rare selection of the artist’s drawings, as well as examples of Kokoschka’s work for the Wiener Werkstätte, such as designs for postcards, fans and an illustrated book.  Special attention is devoted to the architect Adolf Loos, who had a guiding role in the artistic development of the young Kokoschka.
