MADAME D'ORA EXHIBITION CATALOGUE
Edited by Monika Faber
With preface by Ronald S. Lauder, foreword by Renée Price, and contributions by Katrin Bomhoff, Christian Brandstätter, Jean-Marc Dreyfus, Monika Faber, Esther Ruelfs, Lisa Silverman, and Magdalena Vuković

Born Dora Kallmus (1881-1963), the Austrian fashion and portrait photographer took the pseudonym Madame d'Ora. She was the most acclaimed portraitist of the fin-de-siècle Vienna, and went on to create one of the most stylish Art Deco studios in Paris in the 1920s. Her models included Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Colette, and Pablo Picasso, among many others.

The catalogue covers the primary periods of her life and career, from her early upbringing as the daughter of Jewish intellectuals in Vienna, to her days as a premier celebrity and society photographer first in Vienna and later in Paris. It also discusses her survival during the Holocaust and her work photographing refugees in the aftermath of World War II, including a remarkable and searing group of photographs documenting Parisian abattoirs.

STEVEN AND WILLIAM LADD NECKLACE
Strands of glass beads encased in hand-sewn glass bead netting form a 16-inch rope necklace. Hand-cast gold-washed silver clasp. Hand-made presentation box doubles as display pedestal.

PASSEMENTERIE COLLIER DE CHIEN
Elegant Passementerie braid-work was often seen at the royal court of Habsburg Vienna, adorning both ladies’ high-fashion and the dress uniforms of the imperial military. Austrian-born designer Sophie Aschauer channels this tradition with inspired and original accessories created from repurposed ship's ropes. Her intricate patterns are created using the centuries-old sailors' knots she learned as she gained experience sailing off Nantucket.
