Jeanne Mammen: The Observer - Retrospective 1910-1975

Edited by Thomas Koehler and Annelie Luetgens

The Berlin painter and graphic artist Jeanne Mammen is one of the most unusual and colorful figures of recent German art history. Her complete oeuvre and the breaks with tradition that it reveals reflect and comment in an entertaining, critical way on the political and aesthetic upheavals of the last century. This monograph presents an overview of her life's work to a broader public and not only leads viewers deep into the 1920s and 1930s, but also opens up surprising new perspectives on an outstanding artist of classic Modernism.

Jeanne Mammen (21 November 1890 – 22 April 1976) was a German painter and illustrator of the Weimer period. Her work is associated with the New Objectivity, Expressionism and Symbolism movements. She is best known for her depictions of strong, sensual women and Berlin city life.
