Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist. He was curator of the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, prince bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The renaissance-style garden was the first botanical garden in Germany, and the only outside of Italy at the time. Besler is best known for his monumental Hortus Eystettensis (Garden of Eichstätt), the earliest pictorial record of a specific garden and the oldest of all of the great botanicals. Over 1,000 varieties of flowers are depicted in 367 exquisitely engraved and colored plates, setting the standard for the great botanical folios of the following centuries. Six of the plates are reproduced here as greeting cards.
