Hand-pierced brass, unlacquered to promote a natural patina.
Architect Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) was one of the co-founders of the Wiener Werkstätte, a design collective of artists and artisans founded in 1903.
Hoffmann created objects in every medium, demonstrating a particular affinity for metalwork. His gitterwerk, or latticework pieces in metal rank as icons of early twentieth-century design.
This centerpiece from 1904 is among the earliest objects designed by Hoffmann for the workshops, and remains an enduring classic for its elegant simplicity.
