Erich Heckel [German]

Erich Heckel [German]

By Ingrid Mossinger, Anja Richter and Viktoria Tiedeke
Text in German

Erich Heckel is known as one of Germany’s most famous classic Modernist artists. He was a co-founder of the artists’ group, ‘Die Brücke’, as well as its chief executive, and exercised great influence over the development of German Expressionism.

Like Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Heckel also grew up in Chemnitz.

This companion catalogue to the exhibition at the Museum Gunzenhauser focuses on Heckel’s early days in Chemnitz – his family, his friendship with Schmidt Rotluff, and founding of the Gruppe Vulkan – and is the first to present a complete survey of his works from the Chemnitz art collections, the Gunzenhauser Collection, and never-before-seen works on loan from private owners.
